Health Effects of Computer UseIntroductionOver the years, there has been a large increase in the use of computers as the world is evolving. In my study, the objective is to emphasize on the health effects of computer use in working environments and domestic homes. The speed and effectiveness of computers has made a good number organization and businesses depend on the equipment. When the computer was first introduced it was mostly used by adults. In the present day, there have been an increasing number of children using the computer for leisure and education purpose. There have been fears of the use of computer for long periods of time which may cause severe health problems to an individual. The level of discomfort it causes as increased due to the long period of time spent on the computer. In addition, these side effects of computer use develop over a period of time, which makes an individual susceptible to these problems.
Many individuals who work on computers for a long period of time experience discomfort and visual related problems such as cumulative trauma injuries, back neck and shoulder problems, vision, and radiation (NYSUT). Some other effects of computer use would be eye strain and depression. The above mentioned are symptoms of health effects of computer use when the equipment is being used for a prolonged period of time. These symptoms can be avoided through use of ergonomic main beliefs. As a result, these health hazards can be reduced or eliminated, which will help the individual curb unwanted pain and suffering, discomfort, or a disabling condition because of extensive computer use (NYSUT). It is important that we are aware about the things that cause severe damage to our health and wellness. Safety and health tragedies which happened in the past, has awakened the people who got involved in safety movement and demonstrated the importance of having safety regulations regarding hazardous substances (Goetsch 7).
Ergonomic principle plays an essential role when it comes to helping an individual position his or herself when using the computer. Furthermore, it said to be the science of fitting the job to the worker, rather than expecting a worker to accommodate themselves to uncomfortable equipment, postures, and work organization (NYSUT). These helps an individual know the right position to take when using the computer either at work or home, which can help prevent back pain and affect the spinal cord and cause future damage to the body. Most companies expect employees to adjust or manage certain postures while working on the computer and forgetting the implications in the near future. This discomforting position can be quite harmful to the individual’s health and wellness.
The Cumulative Trauma Injuries (CTD’s) can be caused when working on a computer for a long period. As a result, when an individual works on a computer for long period of time it can lead to inflammation of tendons, nerve sheaths, and ligaments, and damage to soft tissues in the body (NYSUT). This depends on the individual’s feeling to the continual movements when typing on the keyboard which can be fatal and disabling at the long run. In addition, there are various types of forearm and wrist CTDs from computer use such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis, epicondylitis, tendinitis, DeQuervain’s disease and ganglionic cysts (NYSUT).
There are various ways to reduce the risk of having CTDs, which can be by changing how you use your computer. This can be done by positioning your wrist in a straight or neutral manner whereby there is no pressure on the tendons and nerves at the same time. Another way of reducing the risk can be avoided by placing the forearm or wrist on a firm surface while using the keyboard.
